As a child of the late-1970s, I grew up gawking at the cars of the ’70s and 1980s, so it was the simple, angular (some might say uninspired and ugly) designs of the period that activated my car nut gene.

It took me a couple of days before I clued into why I like the look of this Scion tC as much as I do: its body is pretty much all straight lines and tight angles. It’s hardly a dead ringer for the many dud designs that came out around my formative years, but the commonality is in the simplicity of the tC’s look, a real contrast to the compound curves, swoops and rounded edges that dominate new cars right now.

The tC is one part of Scion’s 2011 Canadian invasion. This budget-oriented Toyota brand finally reached Canada last year (as 2011 models) after being available in the U.S. since 2003. This is the sports car of the line-up, contrasting with the utilitarian xB and subcompact xD. Nothing about the Scion line looks much like anything wearing the Toyota name, but the tC is indeed based on an existing Toyota model, in this case the Avensis family car the company sells in Europe and the United Kingdom. The Scion brand arrived in Canada in 2010, but the arrival slipped under the radar for a lot of consumers. So much so that most people I encountered while test driving the 2011 Scion xD didn’t know the brand, and couldn’t identify its origin.

If you’re one of those people, here’s the scoop. Scion is a Toyota brand, targeted to younger buyers, and operating in the U.S. since 2003 (if you see a used 2003-2010 Scion for sale, it’s a U.S. car). Three models are offered in Canada, with a fourth set to debut in the near future. Current models are the xD, xB, tC, with the not-yet-released iQ microcar completing the line-up later in 2011.

That’s it for the history lesson; let’s talk xD.

Starting at $17,200, the xD is a front-wheel drive, five-door hatchback that you can actually buy for $17,200 (plus freight and taxes) and feel like you’ve got a well-equipped vehicle. (more…)

New models come to the Canadian market all the time, but it’s not all that often that we get an entirely new brand. One of the most recent to hang out a new shingle is Scion, the entry-level marque offered by Toyota.

Scion was initially launched in the U.S. in 2002. The brand was developed specifically for the North American market, using rebadged Japanese models, and all built in Japan, as they still are. Introduced to Canada for the 2011 model year, the lineup consists of the xD hatchback (based on the Yaris platform), the tC coupe (the European Toyota Avensis) and my tester, the xB hatchback, which shares its underpinnings with the Canadian-built Matrix. The iQ, coming for 2012, is badged as a Toyota in most other markets – and will also be fancied-up to become the Aston Martin Cygnet, which is undoubtedly the strangest sentence I’ve ever had to write.

The xB is probably the best-known of the three models south of the border, where its boxy proportions have earned it the affectionate nickname of “Toaster,” and where its blank-canvas customization possibilities made it very popular with younger drivers. (more…)

New to Canada for the 2011 model year, the Scion xB is one of three Scion vehicles now available in this country, those being the small xD hatchback, the compact xB hatchback, and the compact tC sporty coupe/hatchback. The two-seater Scion iQ micro-car will arrive this Spring.

Scions have been available in the U.S. since 2003, but the cost of establishing a new automotive brand in Canada, a much smaller market than the U.S., deterred parent company Toyota from making that decision until last year. Still, given Canadian’s preference for smaller, more affordable cars, particularly hatchbacks, Scion seems like a natural fit for this country.

With their sub $30,000 pricing, unique styling and available sporty accessories like premium audio systems and sport mufflers, (more…)

You would think Canada has enough small cars already, but Toyota disagrees, as it launches its value-oriented Scion brand north of the 49th for the 2011 model year. Their argument seems valid: Canada has a big appetite for little wheels. It’s odd enough that the U.S. market got Scions before us unlucky Canucks, but even more eyebrow-raising is that the company waited nine years before officially introducing Canadians to the brand’s three-model line-up.

Admission to the Scion party comes for as little as $17,200 for the xD, the subcompact pictured here. You won’t recognize the look based on anything else in the Toyota portfolio, but what’s underneath is nothing new: the xD is built on the same platform as the Toyota Yaris, swapping that car’s little 1.5-litre engine for the 1.8-litre used in the Corolla and Matrix models. That’s a significant upgrade that I’ll get to in a moment, but the xD is also significant for its standard equipment list, which includes 16-inch wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, power windows/locks/heated mirrors, Bluetooth and a Pioneer six-speaker stereo with auxiliary and USB inputs. I’m a marketer’s worst nightmare: I appreciate a creative ad, but rarely pay much mind to what’s actually being advertised. Therefore, when it comes to my thoughts on the philosophy behind Toyota’s Scion line – that the brand is less about the cars themselves and more about having a part in shaping the future of the Generation Y demographic, largely marketing its vehicles specifically to these potential buyers – I don’t really get it.

But though I may not understand Scion’s marketing tactics, it doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the cars themselves, and the xB is a good example. In the current line-up, the xB slots in between the smaller xD hatchback (which began its life in a previous generation as the xA) and the tC coupe. The current xB is the second of its kind, having been redesigned for 2007 into a larger, more powerful, and slightly less nerdy-looking box on wheels. The basic spec includes a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, generating 158 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque and a five-speed manual transmission; a four-speed automatic is optional. (more…)

The Machines that Made Up the Route 66 Rally

The Route 66 Rally is over. To say it was fun would be an understatement. It was one of the best experiences I could ever recommend to someone.

It was 4 days of driving and comradery on some of the best roads America has to offer. For those who missed it, not to worry, there will be another event bigger and better then this one. 2010 was just the first year of this annual event.
