The Machines that Made Up the Route 66 Rally
Michael Schlee

The Route 66 Rally is over. To say it was fun would be an understatement. It was one of the best experiences I could ever recommend to someone.

It was 4 days of driving and comradery on some of the best roads America has to offer. For those who missed it, not to worry, there will be another event bigger and better then this one. 2010 was just the first year of this annual event.

The Rally Ends With a Bang
Michael Schlee

The Route 66 Rally wound down on Friday with a blowout awards ceremony at the Big Texan Steak House. To say the 50 teams participating in the event had a good time would be a gross understatement. The organizers of this amazing event deserve a huge shout out. So, here it is; way to go Scott Spielman and Tony Intrieri!

On the 3rd day of rally, Team Autotrader.ca (me) stuck to our plan of touring the historic Route 66 as opposed to racing to the finish line for the quickest time.

We Find The Original 1926 Road
Michael Schlee

The 2nd day of the Route 66 Rally proved to be even better then the first day. Our group of site seers had grown and ‘The Mother Road’ offered up even more historic sites for our viewing pleasure.

Route 66

Famous bridges, service centers, landmarks and roadways were all over Route 66. At one point, we even ventured onto one of the few remaining stretches of the original Route 66 dating back to 1926. This single lane road was in rough shape, but still existed. It could quite possibly be the highlight of the entire trip.

Travelling Down One the World’s Most Famous Roads
Michael Schlee

When I first decided to enter this rally, I couldn’t wait to compete and test my navigation skills against 50 other competitors. However, a mere 30 minutes into the rally and I realized it was more about the trip down historical route 66 then the rally itself.

Route 66 Rally

I spent the day driving the whole route 66 from Joliet, Illinois to Rolla, Missouri. Along with Brian Shannon in his 2010 Camaro, we took in the sites and sounds of the storied road.

Michael Schlee

At Autotrader.ca, any chance we get to have some fun in our cars we take it. So when the opportunity came along to drive the historic route 66 in the United States, I couldn’t say no.  This is why I became a entrant on the CJ Pony Part’s 2010 Route 66 Rally.

Starting in both Chicago and Los Angeles, 50 teams will embark on a 3 day checkpoint filled journey that will terminate in Amarillo Texas.

A Quick Question and Answer Period with Team Lexus from the 3rd Season of Speed TV’s Bullrun

Michael Schlee

Regular readers of the Autoshow news here on Autotrader.ca will have noticed a series of interviews with the Teams participating on Speed TV’s Reality Racing Show Bullrun. Ramping up for the big premiere on Speed TV February 18th, Season 3 promises to be full of all the action and drama the previous two seasons of Bullrun have offered us.

Team Lexus

This time around I had the opportunity to speak with both Tracy Shayhorn, driver for Team Lexus and Emilie Coppola, Co Driver of Team Lexus. These two ladies piloted a 1992 Lexus SC300 across south-western America during the 3rd Season of Bullrun.

The Great North American Road Trip

Michael Schlee

The long distance road trip seems to be a lost art these days. With airports appearing in even the smallest of towns, air travel has become the preferred method of travel. It is just so easy, quick and cheap to fly these days.

Does that mean the road is officially dead? Well no, there are still some of us brave (crazy?) souls out there who like all that a road trip has to offer. The open road, the freedom, the lure of spontaneous adventures and fresh air will always be persuasive factors in embarking on a road trip.

The Rally Is Rolling
Michael Schlee

The green flag has dropped and the racers are driving their way across the Eastern United States. The Bullrun Rally is well on its way. Currently in day number four, the rally has lived up to the hype. With dozens of memorial stories and sightings being reported all over the internet already, people will still be talking about the rally long after it is finished.

As mention in “Bullrun Rally Ready to Roll”, I was lucky enough to take the green flag start for the rally this year (look for the blue RX-8). I knew going down to New York City that the rally would be something special, but I had no idea how amazing and chaotic it would be.

Rally Begins July 11, 2009 in New York City

Michael Schlee

Sometimes things do not go according to plans.  It is 3 days before I need to be in New York City for the start of Bullrun and my official Bullrun vinyl kit is M.I.A. I need it to be able to partake in the official start of the Bullrun rally. Now normally this would onset panic and dismay. I mean, I am an amateur when it comes to applying vinyl at the best of times and this is a substantial kit. Working fulltime would only leave me 3 evenings at best to get the 10 hour job done. Not to worry though, I have an ace up my sleeve; more on that later.

Bullrun RX-8 Lacking Decals

The event I am preparing for is the 2009 Bullrun Rally. For those not familiar with Bullrun, think of it as a mix between a road rally, a race and a week long non-stop party. With nothing more then a destination and road map, teams of two travel from checkpoint to checkpoint all over the USA during the course of one week. First one there (as determined by their starting and ending time) wins. Of course at the end of each day the teams enjoy some of the wildest and most exclusive night life each host city has to offer.
