2010 Aston Martin V8 Vantage

Automotive theatre at its best
By Nauman Farooq

Product placements can be the best thing for a company and its products. But they can also be a kiss of death. Take Aston Martin for example. Most people recognize the brand for its association with James Bond and quite frankly many people like that. But some people are uncomfortable with this tie-up because they feel people will look at them as wanna-be agent 007.

So today we won’t look at this 2010 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Coupe as James Bond’s potential company car (007 does prefer the bigger DBS model afterall), but instead focus on it as just a car, to see how good or bad it actually is.

Let’s start with the looks. It was penned by Henrik Fisker and was first shown in concept form back in 2003. Time has done nothing to diminish its appeal. It always was and still is one of the most breathtakingly gorgeous automotive designs ever. Even now it turns heads everywhere it goes, drawing in admiring glances. So if you don’t like getting noticed, look elsewhere. (more…)

Geneva Concepts: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

By Nauman Farooq

One of the main attractions for many at a motor show are concept cars. At the 79th Geneva Motor Show, there was no shortage of concept vehicles. However some will never see a traffic light, and some are within months of going into production.

 Giugiaro Frazer-Nash Namir

Here is a list of some of the interesting concepts from this years show.

We start off with the Fioravanti LF1, which is certainly the type of vehicle every car enthusiast would want. Think of it as a Formula-One race car for the streets, literally.

Fioravanti LF1

Fioravanti LF1 Concept

Designed by Leonardo Fioravanti, who has designed many Ferrari road cars, this is his idea of the fusion between the road and track.

The full-size concept wasn’t functional and Fioravanti didn’t name any specific engines for it, but that is probably because this concept is never likely to see the light of day. But it sure would be great to have a car like this in my fantasy garage.

From a fantasy to a nightmare, and that is exactly what came to mind when I first saw pictures of the Aston Martin Lagonda Concept.

Aston Martin Lagonda Concept

Aston Martin typically gets their styling right, and personally being a fan of the quirky yet interesting Lagonda from the 1980’s, I was really looking forward to this new one. Until I saw what was brought to the Geneva stage. This looked like something designed by Dr. Frankenstein, not Marek Reichman.

Due to the global economic downturn, even Aston Martin are cautious to go any further with this concept, and trust me, that is for the better. This four-wheel drive monster deserves to be shot at birth.

Unlike the Infiniti Essence Concept, which deserves to be given life and brought to the market.

Infiniti Essence Concept

Not only is the Essence breathtakingly beautiful, it is somewhat green too, as this is a gas-electric hybrid. However, despite its hybrid drivetrain, I don’t think this 3.7-liter, twin-turbo V6 coupe, producing 592 hp, will give you the gas mileage of a Toyota Prius.

The exterior design has some resemblance of Maserati’s and Jaguar’s, but that is no bad thing. The interior is all original and very high-tech. Lets just all hope and pray that this gorgeous coupe will one day replace the current Infiniti G37 coupe.

Nissan Qazana concept

Nissan Qazana concept

Same goes for the Nissan Qazana concept. Think of it as a replacement for the Nissan Rogue, as it is about the same size, only much better looking. Nissan is looking to introduce a new cross-over in the European market, let’s just hope they don’t forget about those who live on this side of the Atlantic.

Speaking of something huge (like the Atlantic Ocean), Rolls Royce brought out their latest concept in Geneva, called the 200EX. Many are calling it the ‘baby-Phantom’ but don’t think it’s a small car, infact it is longer than a BMW 750Li.

Rolls Royce 200EX

Rolls Royce 200EX concept

Don’t think this is just a concept car either, this is production ready, and will be rolled out for consumption later this year. Maybe Rolls Royce timed it right, because now if you can’t afford the big Phantom, perhaps you’ll make do with this smaller one.

The 200EX however seriously disappointed me with its engine, a new V12. Come on Rolls Royce, you should have used this opportunity to bring out a hybrid, or perhaps a clean-diesel, which would have suited this car just fine. So for me, the 200EX gets a thumb down.

From thumbs down, to thumbs up, which is what the Frazer-Nash Namir concept gets from me. This concept is designed by Giugiaro, and while it might resemble some of their previous efforts, this car still looks wild, just like a supercar should. However, this supercar is not out to destroy the planet, because it is a hybrid. Thanks to its 814cc, rotary engine, that gets help from four electric motors (370 hp produced in total), this car, according to the manufacturer, can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, and top out at 300 km/h. If those claims are proven true, this will be the fastest hybrid in the world.

Apart from the concepts brought by design houses and major manufacturers, there were plenty of interesting cars from component manufacturers and coachbuild companies, like the Rinspeed iChange, the EDAG Light Car, and my personal favorite, the Sbarro Alcador GTB.

There were way too many concepts at this years Geneva Motor Show and if every single one is described, I’d have to write a book. Hope you enjoyed a look at some of the interesting ones.

BMW Z4 roadster

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

By Nauman Farooq

Toronto might not have hosted the World premiere of the 2010 BMW Z4 roadster, but the Toronto International Auto Show is this cars Canadian debut.

This two-seat roadster will be available in Canada with two engine options, a normally-aspirated 3.0-liter, straight six which produces 255hp (sDrive30i), or a twin-turbo variant of that engine which produces 300hp (sDrive35i).

Both models come with a six-speed manual gearbox, while the new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is only reserved for the sDrive35i model.

Despite its performance, the features people will be talking about mostly will be its stunning new appearance and its clever folding hard-top roof, which can be raised or lowered in just 20 seconds.

The new Z4 will be in the showrooms by this July, so if you havenʼt been hit too badly by the credit-crunch, you can park one of these on your driveway this summer.

Spyker C8 Aileron – Calgary bound

Friday, March 13th, 2009

By Nauman Farooq

At the 79th Geneva Motor Show, the Dutch car builder Spyker unveiled their new car, and it is a stunner. It’s called the C8 Aileron.

While mechanically this new version isn’t any different from their previous offering, hence it still has an Audi sourced 4.2-liter, V8, producing 400 hp. Thanks to its 354 lb/ft of torque it can propel from 0-100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds, and onto a top speed of 300 km/h.

It still delivers the power to the rear wheels only, but now you get a choice with transmissions. Base is a six-speed Getrag manual gearbox, or now you can opt for the six-speed ZF automatic that comes with paddle shifters for your driving pleasure.

The new car gets a new chassis, which is wider and longer than before, and hence improves cabin space. Spyker fans will be happy to learn that the exposed, polished gear linkage is kept on this model too. However, you get much more gadgets to play with, including a built in navigation system, Bluetooth interface, iPod connectivity and a new Kharma sound system.

Outside, you get this gorgeous, sculpted body that would make any car enthusiast go weak in the knees.

How much you ask? Base price for the manual is US$229,000, automatic is an extra US$10,000, and the tasty options can run an extra US$30,000.

Spyker’s have been selling cars around the world since 2002, and this year they can add Canada to the list.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, Spyker has an official distributor out of Calgary, Alberta, and they will be displaying two models at the Calgary International Auto and Truck Show, from March 11 to 15. If you can, go there to see these magnificent cars in person.

BMW Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo

Friday, March 13th, 2009

By Nauman Farooq

Most people would be very content with the performance of BMW cars, especially any of their ‘M’ models.

However, some yearn (and can afford) a lot more. That is where Alpina comes in, a company that has been modifying BMW since 1965. Their models are now even covered under BMW’s warranties.

In Geneva, they launched their latest road-rocket, the B7 Bi-Turbo. This is based on the new BMW 750i, and tunes it’s 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 to 507 hp.

BMW Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo

Power is fed to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox. When provoked, it will sprint from 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and onto a top speed of 280 km/h, that won’t make the O.P.P. very happy if you try it here.

Visual differences on the Alpina include a tasty body kit and truly massive 21-inch rims. Instead of run-flat tires, you get higher performance conventional rubber, so just pray that you won’t get a flat.

Inside, Alpina dresses things up with their own selection of leather and wood trim, and you can bet every gadget you could possibly wish for is available on this car.

The previous generation B7 was sold in North America, so here’s hoping this one will be too.

Rolls Royce 200EX concept

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

By Nauman Farooq

Many are calling it ‘the baby Roller’, however that is just in perspective really, because the Rolls Royce 200EX concept is no compact hatchback.

In fact, at 212.6 inches long, it is 13 inches longer than a BMW 7-series. However it is smaller than the Phantom, even though not by much (435mm shorter to be exact).

You don’t get a downsized engine either, this one still gets a V12, so if you are a bit of an environmentalist, this car won’t be for you.

Neither will it be for those who have recently been hit hard by the global economic crisis, as this car will be priced at over $350,000.

For that sort of money, you get the softest leather seats, cornsilk carpets, and cashmere blend headliner. Plus your choice of wood grain and all the chrome you can wish for.

The car sitting at the Geneva Motor Show might say ‘concept’, but don’t be fooled because this car is production ready. Expect to see the production version at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year.

VW Polo

Monday, March 9th, 2009

By Nauman Farooq

At the 79th Geneva Motor Show, VW rolled out the fifth generation version of their Polo model.

This will be the first Polo model that will be on sale in North America, and will be priced as a cheaper alternative to the Golf.

The overall exterior and interior styling of the Polo is very much like a slightly shrunken Golf, which is no bad thing.

For the European market, the Polo will be offered with seven engine choices, which include four-gasoline and three diesel options. Not yet known how many engines will be offered in North America.

The front-wheel drive Polo is available with three gearbox choices too, base models will get a five-speed manual, while higher trim models will get a six-speed manual. A seven-speed DSG (dual-clutch) semi-automatic will also be offered.

The new Polo will go into production by the end of March, and should be on sale globally by July.

Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV

Monday, March 9th, 2009

 By Nauman Farooq

For those of you who might think that a standard Lamborghini Murcielago wasn’t fast enough, well your prayers have been answered.

Lamborghini just pulled off the covers of their latest road missile at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. It’s called the Murcielago LP670-4 SV.

Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV

Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV

The name is more than just a bunch of letters and numbers put together, as ‘LP’ stands for ‘longitudinal-posterior’ for the position of the engine in its bay, ‘670’ denotes its horsepower figure, ‘4’ is for four-wheel drive, and ‘SV’ stands for ‘Super Veloce’ or super fast in English.

Thanks to its diet (the SV is 100kg lighter than a regular Murcielago), it can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 341km/h. This is also the first time in Lamborghini’s history that an SV model will come with a six-speed, F1-inspired paddle-shift gearbox.

For all you supercar spotters, you can differentiate the SV from lesser Murcielago’s from its new nose, its wider exhaust, its transparent engine cover, and oh yes, that very large rear wing.

How much you ask? Well if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it.

Bugatti Veyron Bleu Centenaire

Monday, March 9th, 2009

By Nauman Farooq

One of the most highly anticipated premieres for this year’s Geneva Motor Show was for the latest version of the Bugatti Veyron.

It is called the Bleu Centenaire, and marks the brands 100th birthday.

However, many were expecting this version to be a lighter, faster version of this already super fast supercar, but unfortunately that is not the case.

Bugatti Veyron Bleu Centenaire

Bugatti Veyron Bleu Centenaire

This new edition is nothing more than a new paint job with some even more exclusive interior trimming options.

So while it might not be any faster than a normal Veyron, it is hard not to be impressed by a car that produces 1001 hp from its quad-turbo, 16-cylinder engine, and can top 407 km/h.

Bugatti, which is owned by the VW Group, produces the Veyron at a specially built factory in Molsheim, France. Each Veyron takes over 500 hours to complete and prices start at $1,624,000 (Euros 1-million).

Unfortunately, if you live in Canada, you cannot have a Veyron, as they are not street-legal here.

Audi A4 Allroad

Monday, March 9th, 2009

By Nauman Farooq

I have an interesting question to ask; what do you get when you cross-breed a station wagon with a sport utility vehicle?

You get the Audi A4 Allroad.

Audi A4 Allroad

Carlos Bianchi, Boca Juniors; Willy Sagnol, FC Bayern; Gennaro Gattuso, AC Mailand; Frank Dreves, Member of the Board AUDI AG Production; Karl Hopfner, FC Bayern München; Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board AUDI AG Sales and Marketing; Uli Hoeneß, FC Bayern München; Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management AUDI AG

OK, this isn’t exactly a new concept. Audi has been selling Allroad variants of their A6 model since 2000, and while the model was discontinued from the North American market in 2005, they still sell them in decent numbers in Europe.

Hence the new A4 Allroad is aimed squarely at the European market, with no plans for its introduction in North America at the moment.

However, if you are moving to Europe and are provided a car allowance, you might be interested to know that the A4 Allroad would be available with either a 2.0-liter, TFSI, four-cylinder gas engine (211 hp), or choose between a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel (170 hp) and a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel (240 hp).

A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, while the seven-speed, dual-clutch, S Tronic gearbox is available as an option.

A4 Allroads are easy to spot due to their beefier bumpers and flared wheel-arches and it rides 3-inches higher than a regular A4.

The A4 Allroad goes on sale in Europe this month.
