Miami, Florida – At a time when some other vehicle manufacturers are struggling, Kia is getting it right.

Under the design guidance of Peter Schreyer (formally of Audi), Kia has revised nearly every model in its line-up. The oldest model is now the Rondo, introduced just four years ago. All are attractive vehicles and consumers have taken notice, driving Kia sales in Canada upward.

The most recent revision is the Kia Optima (formerly the Magentis, but known in nearly every other market as the Optima) and the timing for its introduction to the Canadian media couldn’t have been better – the last day of the month, the day that monthly sales figures are released. (more…)

2006.5 – 2010 Kia Magentis

It’s a funny thing, this business of naming cars. There are many whose monikers are made-up words, and others whose names are creative variations on real ones. The Kia Magentis fell into the latter category, at least in Canada (and Australia, Europe and Brazil); cross the border into the United States, though, and you’ll find this same car, called the Optima. A far better name for a car, don’t you think? I do, and that’s why I’m glad Kia ditched the Magentis badge when the third generation (2011) version of this car was launched.

I’m getting ahead of myself, though; the focus of this used vehicle column is the second-generation Magentis, sold from the mid-2006 model year (early cars were labelled 2006.5) through 2010.

Engine choices were between a 2.4-litre four-cylinder (161 hp) and a 2.7-litre V6 (185 hp); the four came with a five-speed manual transmission that could be optioned to a five-speed automatic, while the six-cylinder got the automatic only. (more…)

2011 Kia Sedona EX Luxury

Despite the rising popularity of SUVs and CUVs, and the discontinuation of minivans by a few manufacturers, I might well paraphrase Mark Twain in that any reports of their demise are far from accurate. Honda, Nissan and Toyota have all released redesigns of their vans, while my tester, the Kia Sedona, undergoes numerous changes for 2011.

The most noticeable one is a new engine, a 3.5-litre V6 that replaces the previous 3.8-litre V6. Horsepower rises significantly, while torque falls slightly: the new engine produces 271 horsepower in place of the previous 244, and torque is now 248 lb.-ft., versus the 253 lb.-ft. of the 3.8-litre. As is usual these days, fuel economy improves despite the rise in pony-power. The new engine is rated at 11.5 L/100 km (25 mpg Imp) in the city and 8.0 (35) on the highway; in combined winter driving, I averaged 12.3 (23).

Other changes include stability and traction control now standard on all models – these used to be unavailable on the base trim line – along with a new grille, standard Bluetooth connectivity (but don’t drive and talk anyway), and new standard features on the various trims. Pricing starts at $27,995 for the base LX model, while my top-line tester, the EX-Luxury, was $39,995. A navigation system, which can only be added to the EX-Luxury, is an additional $1,000. (more…)

With the world’s automakers scrambling to meet ever more stringent fuel economy and emission targets, the compact sedan game is moving along at a pretty decent clip.

The current darling of the bunch here in North America is the Chevy Cruze, garnering praise for its quality interior and big-car demeanour. It is in the final running for AJAC’s Canadian Car of the Year. Soon to enter the fray are the all-new Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra, the former which promises engaging Euro-dynamics and the latter which looks to kick serious butt with its mini-Sonata good looks in conjunction with class leading power and fuel economy.

And then there is that trio of 800-pound gorillas: the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Mazda3. (more…)

2011 Kia Rondo EX-V6

What’s the secret behind buying an economical car? Price is certainly a factor, but so is functionality. The most economical car may well be the one that does what’s needed of it without overkill. And that brings me to the 2011 Kia Rondo.

Depending on your needs, it can potentially work as a car, a minivan or compact SUV, thanks to its height, car-like driving characteristics and an available third row for seating up to seven passengers. It hasn’t had a major overhaul since its introduction for 2007, but don’t let that stop you from putting it on your test-drive list. It isn’t the most sophisticated model out there, but it’s definitely one of the most useful.

No doubt due to American buyers’ dislike of hatchbacks, it’s no longer offered in the U.S. market. In Canada, the 2011 model is on sale now, and Kia Canada says that it will continue into the 2012 model year. (more…)

2011 Kia Forte5 EX

It doesn’t look it, but the 2011 Kia Forte5 is a little bit retro. The prevailing trend is for new cars to be more refined and more grown up than the ones they replace, so it’s easy to get used to the concept of a compact that drives more like a mid-sized car.

I’ve driven the Kia Forte before. In fact, with this test drive, I’ve spent time behind the wheel of all three Forte variants: sedan, coupe and hatchback. But I noticed something new in the Forte5, and that something is how much it reminds me of small cars from a couple of generations ago, when a small car was basic transportation, instead of being a small car trying to act like a bigger one.

Naturally, that aspirational reach up to the next size class isn’t a bad thing. It usually adds refinement, and tends to add safety, with compacts now featuring standard anti-lock brakes, (more…)

You might be surprised by the title of this article – 2011 Kia Sportage EX Luxury – and the moniker given to this top-of-the-line trim level for the all-new 2011 compact sport utility vehicle.

Luxury? Surely they jest. You might not think to use the words “luxury” and “Kia” in the same sentence, but Kia has with this compact SUV, and after a week with the car, I have to agree. The 2011 Kia Sportage EX Luxury is, well, pretty darned luxurious.

For a less-than-luxurious $33,145, my nearly-loaded 2011 Kia Sportage tester came with such luxury features as a power panoramic sun roof that fills the passenger compartment with light; 18-inch alloy wheels with P235/55R18 inch all-season tires; LED daytime running lights, fog lights and projector beam head lights; integrated turn signals in the side mirrors; chrome door handles; leather seating surfaces, heated up front and power adjustable for the driver; dual-zone automatic (more…)

2011 Kia Sorento EX-V6 Luxury

Language geeks will tell you that nothing can ever be both new and improved, only one or the other. But something can be both new and an improvement over what it replaces, which is the case with the 2011 Kia Sorento.

2011 Kia Sorento EX

It wasn’t too hard to improve upon the first-generation Sorento, which was a comfortable but fairly unsophisticated SUV with thirsty engines, a truly-truckish body-on-frame construction, and solid rear axle suspension.

Everything about this second-generation version is all-new: 2.4-litre four-cylinder (175 hp/169 lb-ft of torque) and 3.5-litre V6 (276 hp/248 lb-ft) engines which replace the old truck’s two V6s; a newly available all-wheel drive system and a new front-wheel drive model; an all-independent suspension; and a new – and, you might even say, improved – look inside and out. 2010 Kia Forte

By Bill Roebuck

The compact 2010 Kia Forte (pronounced for-tay) replaces the Spectra sedan. Redesigned inside and out, it boasts a new, sporty front end with a wide bumper. Slim four-bulb headlamps are covered with a clear lens with a black aluminum bezel for a high-tech look. Overall, the design is clean and sleek. Three trim levels are being offered: LX, EX and SX.

The Forte’s high-tech look continues on the interior, with a symmetrical, high-visibility display. A stylistically enhanced, three-spoke steering wheel features built-in multi device controllers on the spokes for ease of operation. There’s seating room for five passengers and 416 L of cargo space.

Power in the base LX model comes from a four-cylinder, 2.0-L DOHC engine producing 156 hp. It’s mated to a CVT (continuously variable transmission). The SX gets a 2.4-L inline-four delivering 173 hp, which can be selected with a six-speed manual transmission for extra sportiness.

The front-wheel-drive Forte has an independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and a stabilizer bar, and a torsion beam rear suspension with struts and coil springs.

Active front headrests are standard, as are dual front airbags, curtain airbags and side airbags, and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS.
