Since their introduction in 2003, the “G” series of Infiniti vehicles has been a major success. Starting with the G35 and moving to the G37, the celebrated VQ engine was one of the key ingredients of that success. Impossibly smooth, refined and powerful, the current 328-horsepower, 3.7-litre version of this V6 engine continues the tradition.

But the engine also contributes to cost, and unlike other luxury vehicles, it was, until this year, the only engine option available for Infiniti “G” buyers.

That changes with the G25. Driving the price down by about $3,000 and reducing fuel consumption by nine to 11 per cent (according to Infiniti), the G25 is powered with a 2.5-litre V6 engine making 218 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque. (more…)

Even though Nissan’s luxury division has long since dropped its flagship Q45 model, the spirit of the car that launched the Infiniti brand back in 1989 is still very much with us in the new M56S.

The original Q was a driver’s luxury car; a model that helped to establish Infiniti as a Japanese alternative to BMW. It was firm and responsive and lacked the luxury frou-frou that adorned the rival Lexus LS 400. It was also chock-full of technology for its day, although it would be embarrassed by many of today’s economy cars in that department.

So the original Q was a hit with me, but I was 15 at the time; hardly a member of Infiniti’s affluent target market. (more…)

Infiniti, the luxury division of Nissan, pulled the wraps off the 2011 edition of its flagship M series sedan earlier this year. It comes in both rear-drive and all-wheel drive versions and has been completely redesigned inside and out, with very attractive long and slinky exterior styling lines.

The M was designed around an idea called “organic body glove,” according to Ian Forsyth, director of product and corporate planning at Nissan Canada. “We wanted to build a vehicle that’s adaptive to the environment, different road types, different styles of driving and fits so well that it becomes an extension of the driver,” he said.

Since Infiniti abandoned its Q series, the M has become the flagship sedan of the luxury division. Under the hood, there’s now a choice of V6 and V8 engines; both have small increases in displacement and substantial increases in power. Yet, because of new technology advances, the new M consumes even less fuel, despite the power improvement. (more…)

Over the last few years, Infiniti has been playing with its drawing pens in all the right places. Once stodgy and forgettable, the brand’s styling has morphed into strong yet organic lines. This all comes together in the redesigned 2011 M sedan, the company’s flagship line, a slippery, sinewy model that looks like it’s splitting the air when it moves.

My tester was the M56x, with a 5.6-litre V8 under its hood, and all-wheel drive powering its wheels. It’s a lovely car inside and out, but it suffers from a bit of an identity crisis, trying too hard to straddle the line between sporty and sedate. It’s not thrilling enough when tossed into the corners to be a sports sedan, at least not in the sense of what Audi or BMW sends out in the segment, and its harsh ride, the result of its sportiness, really isn’t what I would have expected in a luxury car. It’s still generally nice to drive overall, but Infiniti needs to determine exactly where to position this particular model. (more…)

2011 Infiniti G25

Ever since Infiniti launched its G-series line-up, it has not only been winning numerous awards by the motoring press, but also has won the hearts of many buyers.

Part of the reason it has done so well is by offering variety. You can buy the G-series as either a sedan, a coupe or a folding hard-top convertible. You also get to choose between a manual or automatic gearbox, plus the choice between rear-wheel drive or intelligent all-wheel drive.

However, there has only ever been one engine on offer with the G-series, the 3.7-litre, V6. As impressive as this engine might be, Infiniti’s competition offer their models with a variety of engines. This enables them to price the car at different levels thus opening the market to a larger clientele. (more…)

My kids couldn’t decide whether our 2011 Infiniti QX56 tester was a beluga or a hippo.

This is no slight against Infiniti’s all-new super-size-me $73,000 SUV that, despite my prejudice against such things, impressed the heck out of me. It’s more a comment on how Infiniti’s organically flowing design signature and low-slung xenon headlights bestow upon this seven- (or eight-) seat behemoth the countenance of a large and lovable aquatic mammal. A definite improvement over the outgoing and ungainly 2010 model of which this 2011 is marginally lower, wider and longer, and carries the same price tag.

While the new QX is still a traditional body-on-frame SUV, with a maximum tow rating of 8,500 lbs, there is nothing truck-like in the way it glides down the road, coddling its occupants in a cocoon of quiet luxury. (more…)

2004-2009 Infiniti QX56

Introduced in 2004, the QX56 was the Infiniti’s first full-size truck, added to the lineup as a replacement for the QX4, a much smaller vehicle based on the second-generation Nissan Pathfinder platform.

The QX56 was based directly on the Nissan Armada, which in turn shared most of its dirty bits with the Nissan Titan full-size pickup. As such, the QX56 was powered by the same 5.6-litre V8 (315 hp/390 lb-ft) found in those two vehicles, backed up by a five-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive with low-range gearing. Note that U.S. buyers got the option of a rear-wheel drive model.

The engine’s output rose nominally in 2007, to 320 hp and 393 lb-ft of torque. (more…)

Touring the Infiniti Display at CIAS

By Michael Schlee

Infiniti has quite possibly the classiest display at CIAS. The hardwood flooring they used wouldn’t look out of place in your dining room.

Continuing with the classy theme, most of Infiniti’s vehicles on display are black with a few others in white or neutral colours.
