Introduced in 2007, the Versa was Nissan’s entry in a class of entry-level cars that included the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent and Chevrolet Aveo. All of those cars were notable in some way, but they were also all small. Not surprising in a category where pricing begins not far off the $10,000 mark, but the Versa’s claim to fame was its size. It was marketed as a subcompact, and yet offered a roomier interior and more refined performance than just about anything it could be compared to price-wise. The Versa was large enough inside that Natural Resources Canada classed it as a mid-sized(!) car for the purposes of its fuel consumption ratings.

In its early years, Saab enjoyed a strong cult following based on its vehicles’ unique styling and interesting design features. General Motors’ purchase of the Swedish brand in 1989 should have been a good thing, but as GM moved to position Saab as a competitor for European luxury brands like Audi and BMW, much of that Scandinavian uniqueness was lost.

The Acura RL is the third generation of the Honda luxury brand’s flagship sedan, a car that traces its roots to the Acura Legend first sold in North America in 1986. At its redesign in 2005, the RL was the first of the brand’s vehicles to use the SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) that would become one of Acura’s defining technical features.

Chrysler, it seems, is perpetually in financial trouble, a strange thing for a company that has been capable of producing successful vehicles. Take the ubiquitous Grand Caravan minivan, or the LH sedans (Intrepid, Concorde, New Yorker, 300 M, Eagle Vision and LHS, sold at various times from 1993 through 2004), both vehicles that brought something new to their respective market segments (or were instrumental in creating them, in the case of the original Caravan).
