If there’s anything General Motors has learned from the tough times it faced in the past, it’s that you need to spend the money where it counts. So while the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD (heavy-duty) is a new model, you’ll probably say it doesn’t look much different from the 2010 version, apart from a new domed hood and chrome bumpers. That’s because the cash was channelled into the stuff that really matters on a heavy-duty: beefier frame, stronger suspension and more diesel power. It worked: the new model was named Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year for 2011.

The 6.0-litre gasoline V8 carries over, making 360 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque, but my tester was powered by the big news, a new 6.6-litre Duramax turbodiesel producing 397 horsepower and 765 lb.-ft. of torque. The block is the same as last year’s oil-burner, a 6.6-litre making 365 horsepower and 660 lb.-ft. of twist, but the guts are new, providing more power, quieter operation, and what GM says is improved fuel economy. We’ll have to take the company’s word on it, since the 2500 HD is large enough that published fuel figures aren’t available, but I noticed a considerable difference between this truck and one I’d driven in the past. Since their introduction in 2003, the “G” series of Infiniti vehicles has been a major success. Starting with the G35 and moving to the G37, the celebrated VQ engine was one of the key ingredients of that success. Impossibly smooth, refined and powerful, the current 328-horsepower, 3.7-litre version of this V6 engine continues the tradition.

But the engine also contributes to cost, and unlike other luxury vehicles, it was, until this year, the only engine option available for Infiniti “G” buyers.

That changes with the G25. Driving the price down by about $3,000 and reducing fuel consumption by nine to 11 per cent (according to Infiniti), the G25 is powered with a 2.5-litre V6 engine making 218 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque. (more…)

2006-2011 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 debuted in 1996, making it one of the originators of the “cute-ute” compact SUV segment, along with the Suzuki Sidekick and Honda CR-V. Through its first two generations, it was indeed compact, but the third generation, underwent a significant transformation into a vehicle verging on mid-size crossover territory.

This seemingly steroidal upgrade brought a number of firsts to the RAV4, including a V6 engine and three-row seating. The basic RAV4 was powered by the same 2.4-litre, four-cylinder engine found in the previous generation, its 166 hp/165 lb.-ft. of torque proving adequate, but not amazing, in its new, heavier host. The optional 3.5-litre V6 was a more satisfying choice with its 268 hp/246 lb.-ft., but a jumpy throttle made it feel almost like too much motor. All-wheel drive was standard, as were automatic transmissions; the four-cylinder got a four-speed, and the V6 was mated to a five-speed. (more…)
