So long Mercedes-Benz SLR, come fly with me SLS

What a difference a single letter makes. The Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR supercar developed in association with the famous F1 racing outfit is no more, and although execs insist it is not a replacement, the newest ultimate supercar from Mercedes is the reborn Gullwing, the 2011 SLS AMG.

The Gullwing was the apt nickname for the popular Mercedes-Benz 300SL coupe and convertible from the mid-60s, so dubbed because of its unique roof-hinged doors that opened like a bird taking off in flight. Similar gullwing doors were copied by a few craft car makers, notably Bricklin (check) and Delorean, of Back to the Future fame, but mention gullwing doors to anyone who loves cars, and it’s those early Benz SLs that spring to mind quickest.

And so the 2011 SLS that arrives this spring as a long delayed spiritual successor to that winged classic, but with loads more power, lightweight components throughout, and a focus on interior creature comforts of little concern to the race-derived original. (more…)

Lexus LF-Ch Concept teases production CT 200h hatchback

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

The Lexus LF-Ch concept shown at the CIAS may have been introduced as a concept, but just days later, Toyota’s upscale division confirmed that a production version of the compact but high-tech hatchback was destined for production. The question is, will that production car make it to North America, or perhaps even Canada only, and by when?

The new Lexus hatchback will be called the CT 200h, and will have its global debut at the Geneva auto show, which opens just two weeks after the close of the Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto in early March. Lexus is still being coy with information about the production car, showing only its badge and other small details in teaser images released by the company about the car. But at least now we know that the previously released LF-Ch information should give us a major clue into the new entry that’ll likely be in Lexus showrooms by the end of 2010, at least in Europe. Audi’s flagship sedan shows light (and comfort) is might

Audi Canada CEO Martin Sander showed off the German brand’s new four-door flagship in Toronto by highlighting the increased use of lightweight aluminum, which helps make the A8 one of the lightest and therefore sportiest full-size luxury sedans, as well as significantly more fuel-efficient than its predecessor.

The new 2011 A8 is the third generation A8, with an all-aluminum space frame that helps keep weight about where its predecessor fell, but in a three-inch (7.6 cm) longer and two-inch (5.1) wider car that’s better equipped car with a new eight-speed automatic (versus six-speed currently).

The A8’s 4.2-litre V8 engine uses the same architecture as found throughout the Audi line (R8, Q7, A6) but upgraded from 350 hp in the previous A8 to 372 now. Final fuel consumption numbers aren’t in yet for North America, but Audi expects the latest A8 4.2 will achieve a 15 per cent improvement in fuel economy, as it scores 9.5 L/100km on the European overall cycle.

Just looking at the curb weights, the A8 – which comes standard with quattro all-wheel drive – is already significantly lighter than its main S-Class and 7 Series rivals, especially the all-wheel drive versions. While the outgoing A8 used an all-aluminum space frame as well, the use of the lightweight but pricier technology has now been extended to the entire chassis as well. (more…)

Bringing back the fun of the Honda CRX, if that’s possible, with Insight hybrid roots

Friday, February 19th, 2010

By Michael Bettencourt

With the demise of the Honda S2000, this summer will see that two-seater replaced with another two-seat fun machine, Honda Canada confirmed in Toronto at the CIAS, with the Canadian introduction of the CR-Z Hybrid hatchback.
The many folks who fondly remember Honda’s two-seat CRX will appreciate the new CR-Z, as it follows the same lighter is better formula, although this time largely based on the Honda Insight hatchback rather than the Civic. The CR-Z therefore offers a similar 1.5-litre Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) engine as the Insight hybrid, with 122 hp, but with less weight and more performance thanks to two seats, and the availability of an enthusiast-friendly six-speed manual transmission.

Honda CR-Z

Honda CR-Z

That two-seat, low weight emphasis was prevalent on the technically remarkable but remarkably impractical first generation Honda Insight gas-electric hybrid that debuted for the 2000 model year in North America, about six months before the launch here of the Toyota Prius. Going back, the Honda CRX was a shortened, stiffened and lightened version of the Civic in the 1980s and 90s. And just like the old CRX hatchback, the new CR-Z concept offers a black but see-through rear hatch to aid in rear visibility.

Honda previously confirmed that it will sell hybrid versions of the Fit and next generation Honda Civic in Europe and Japan as part of a new emphasis on small hybrid vehicles, but hasn’t confirmed when or if those vehicles are coming to North America. With the current gen Honda Civic entering its fifth year this fall, it’s a safe bet that a new gasoline version will appear soon, as it’s scheduled to be in dealerships by this time next year if not late 2010.
Manufacturing teams from the Alliston, Ontario Honda plant that build all Civics sold in Canada – except the Hybrid – are in Japan now working on it, factory officials confirmed last fall. Sales of the Civic Hybrid would have to be sold in much higher numbers to be able to justify bringing its production to North America as well, said Honda Canada Manufacturing’s Jon Minto.

The CR-Z will offer high intensity (HID) headlights, a 360 watt stereo with subwoofer and USB/MP3 inputs, and a CVT transmission for customers who don’t want to experience the first manual transmission in a gas-electric hybrid. Final fuel economy numbers are not available yet, but Honda’s U.S. arm has estimated overall averages of 33 and 37 mpg (check L/100km) for the automatic (CVT in reality) and stick shift versions, respectively.

Faces of C.I.A.S. 2010

The legendary Henry Ford, the man who started Ford Motor Company had a saying, “Give me a baby or a puppy and I can sell anything.”

Automobile manufacturers these days however employ a rather different approach to attract customers, and that is by hiring beautiful women to enhance the quality of their display.

This trend actually started in the 1950’s in America when the “Motorama’s” (as auto shows were called back then) used to roll into towns. People flocked to the shows to not only see the wild and crazy concept cars of the era, but also the beautiful women that would adorn the stage.

These days it’s the European car firms who best understand the idea behind booth beauties, as Fiat owned Chrysler has shown recently. They had a beautiful girl to go with pretty much every car on their display. Fiat is afterall an Italian company, and the Italians do understand style.

Here is a gallery of the beautiful women working in Toronto at the 2010 Canadian International Auto Show. Enjoy!

BMW goes performance heavy on the Z4’s “M light” treatment

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

By Michael Bettencourt

Even with a relatively mild winter in most parts of the country this year, February is always a tough time to launch a convertible. So when BMW Canada president Franz Jung introduced the Z4 sDrive35is Roadster at the Canadian International AutoShow, the majority of his presentation examined the firm’s environmental initiatives, which it dubs Efficient Dynamics.

BMW Z4 sDrive35is

BMW Z4 sDrive35is

What’s efficiency have to do with a more powerful two-seat folding hard top sports car? BMW says that despite the Z4 sDrive35is having 35 hp more than the top current Z4, the 300 hp but “s-less” Z4 sDrive35i, it also achieves the same official fuel economy figures than the regular Z4 sDrive35i with the automatic. Some have dubbed the Z4 is the “M light:” faster than a regular version, but still more of a comfort focus than hardcore M models.
If you’re still trying to keep up with BMW’s new digit-heavy naming system, the first “s” refers to rear wheel-drive, while it’s the last “s” that is new for this year.

The new 2011 Z4 sDrive35is offers 335 hp from an upgraded twin turbo 3.0-litre inline six, while torque is also up to 332 lb-ft, compared to 300 in the Z4 35i. There’s also an overboost function that temporarily boosts max torque output in the 35is up to 369 lb-ft, before reducing boost pressure to protect the engine components. (more…)

Priciest and most exclusive Audi now becomes R8 Spyder with V10

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

By Michael Bettencourt

Audi’s priciest and most exclusive model for 2010 is the R8 Spyder, the convertible version of the R8 that comes with only one engine: the pounding 5.2-litre V10 borrowed from sister company Lamborghini, even if it does receive a minor detuning.

Audi R8 Spyder

Audi R8 Spyder

The 5.2-litre V10 engine is the same one that bullies around the Lamborghini Gallardo, although the mill is much quieter and more refined behind the Audi’s two seats, with power down slightly but to a still formidable 525 hp. That’s enough kick to launch the R8 Spyder to from rest to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, according to Audi, with a top speed of 313 km/h, if you can let you find a track that will let you do that in a convertible.

This blistering performance is helped along by a light-weight aluminum space frame and your choice of six-speed transmission: a traditional six-speed manual with a Ferrari-esque aluminum stick shift that clink-clinks into each gear, or a single-clutch R-tronic gearbox that provides an automatic mode for downtown driving. It’s not as smooth as the most modern dual-clutch boxes, or a regular grocery getter’s automatic for that matter, but it’s one of the few weak points of a car that managed to charm the pants off enough Canadian auto journalists to earn the first R8 coupe the Canadian Car of the Year title a couple years back. Mitsubishi confirms electric Canadian intent with plug-in i-MiEV and PX-MiEV

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

By Michael Bettencourt

Mitsubishi Motors Canada easily had the most news of any company at the show. But the big news was that they confirmed that the firm plans to sell the electric four-seat i-MiEV to the public. Still, it wasn’t quite the rock solid introduction one normally sees with regular cars: Mitsu Canada officials specified that the all-electric i-MiEV was “planned for sale in Canada in 2011,” leaving themselves a little wiggle room on timing or even whether or not to sell it here at all.

Mitsubishi Motors president Osamu Masuko made his first official visit to the show as head of Mitsu Japan for the press conference, one of the few international company presidents to make the trip. Then again, he also had more news to announce than any other exec there: he confirmed that a small SUV to slot in under the Outlander will arrive by the fall, that a new parts distribution building would be built in a new building near their Canadian headquarters in Mississauga, that a production version of the displayed mid-size PX-MiEV plug-in electric concept SUV would be on the road in 2013, and that a new electric car research program with Transport Canada will launch with the i-MiEV this year.

“This expansion of testing with Canadian partners will help bring the i-MiEV to the streets of Canada,” said Masuko at the show, without specifying whether they’d be sold to fleets or governments only or consumers as well next year. “Our plan is to launch electric vehicles in North America in 2011.” (more…)

CIAS: Toyota Prius PHV

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

By Nauman Farooq

Toyota has had a rough start to the year 2010. They have constantly been in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Toyota Prius PHV

First came news about problems with their accelerator pedals which has resulted in a massive recall involving many of their vehicles.

Then owners of the Prius, which is the most popular hybrid in the world, got a recall regarding its brakes.

Most recently, the Toyota Tacoma was added to the list of recalled vehicles with a possible problem with its front drive shaft.

Regardless of these setbacks, Toyota is moving forward, and their display at the 2010 Canadian International Auto Show is evident of that. (more…)
