Jaguar XFR

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

By Mike Goetz

Jaguar had a few things to growl about at Detroit. Most notable was the introduction of its all-new-from-the-ground-up 5.0-litre V8, which finds its way into both the new XF sedans and the XK coupes and convertibles.

It purported to feature the world’s first spray-guided direct injection system. Naturally aspirated versions are good for 380 hp @ 3,500 rpm and 461 lb-ft of torque, from 2,500 to 5,500 rpm. (By the way, the current 300-hp 4.2-litre V8 stays in the line-up, partly to keep XJ powered, and partly to be an alternative to the competition’s V6 models.)

Jaguar XFR

For duty in the first-time-seen XFR, which also debuted at Detroit, and the revised XKR, the new 5.0 litre V8 is boosted the traditional Jag way – by fitting twin “Eaton” type superchargers. The blowers crank the V8’s output to 461 hp (2,500-5,500 rpm) and 625 lb-ft of torque (2,500-5,500). That’s sic.

To demonstrate the awesomeness of this engine, Jaguar took an XFR to Bonneville, and during a secret speed trial, posted a stunning top speed run of 225.675 mph, making it the fastest Jaguar ever.

Eight Canadian Premieres at Ford and GM

By Marc Lachapelle

The Montreal International Auto Show has opened the automotive New Year in this country for most of the past four decades* and this 41st edition has plenty of the newest models on display, in spite of the uncertain state of the economy.

Of the thirty-four new models that made their Canadian début during the MIAS press day on January 15, eight were from Ford and General Motors, equally split between the two. Chrysler had no all-new models to show in Montreal and existing ones were simply laid out on bare carpet. A message signed by Chrysler Canada President and CEO Reid Bigland was shown in Chrysler’s exhibit and explained that there would be “less glitz and no giveaways” at this year’s show, Bigland wrote, as Chrysler saves to invest rather in: “24 major launches from 2009 to 2014.”

2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid – 2010 Lincoln MKZ
The mood was much more upbeat at the Ford exhibit, where the century-old Blue Oval introduced the all-new 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid that it claims to be the most fuel-efficient mid-size sedan on this continent thanks to its leading-edge gas-electric hybrid powertrain. Ford even claims a rather astounding 1,127-kilometre fuel range for this car, in city driving. . . Unveiled a few metres further was the 2010 Lincoln MKZ entry-luxury sedan, which shares the same solid platform as the Fusion and gets the corresponding upgrades.

2010 Ford Mustang
The 2010 Ford Mustang also made its first public appearance in Canada boasting a restyled body, a redesigned interior and updated versions of its engines and chassis components. The star of this new and revamped line-up will undoubtedly be the 540-horsepower Shelby GT 500 that was unveiled in Detroit a few days earlier.

2011 Ford Fiesta
But small cars are big news these days and more so in Quebec, where compacts and subcompacts have dominated sales figures for many years. Ford predictably made a big splash with the very pretty lime-green Fiesta four-door hatchback it unveiled during the press day in Montreal. The car on display was a European model Ford brought out as teaser for the upcoming North American model. The Fiesta should be introduced in 2010 as a 2011 model, offered as both a hatchback and a sedan and built in the refurbished Ford plant in Hermosillo, Mexico to help keep it fully price-competitive against the likes of Fit and Yaris.

2009 Saturn Vue Hybrid
In the next hall, the greatest emphasis was put on environmentally-friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles during the press intro at General Motors. The 2009 Saturn Vue Hybrid compact sport-ute and Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid full-size pickup compete in very different segments and target very different buyers, but they share versions of the new two-mode hybrid powertrain that GM has jointly developed with BMW, Chrysler LLC and Daimler. The same technology was also announced in Montreal, that same morning, as the winner of the inaugural Best New Green Technology award from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC).

2010 Buick Allure
On a different note, General Motors also rolled out the fully-redesigned and quite elegantly-styled 2010 Buick Allure entry-luxury sedan, for its premier Canadian showing. The new Allure – still named LaCrosse in the U.S. – can be delivered with either a new direct-injection, 255-horsepower, 3.0-litre V6 or the proven 3.6-litre V6, rated at 280 horsepower. The Allure will be available with either front-wheel or four-wheel drive.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS
And how quickly things change: While ‘green by design’ was the dominant mantra at GM, the production version of a car that was the main attraction at auto shows still recently was introduced more than discreetly. A few dozen metres from centre stage and practically unlit stood a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS painted in the familiar bright-orange of the classic Camaros of the Sixties, complete with its 6.2-litre, 422-horsepower V8 engine. It will nevertheless most likely again prove a big with the public in Montreal.

* The show had to be cancelled in 1999 and it was held in November only once, in 2002.

Subaru Legacy Concept

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

By Marc Lachapelle

Going against the current at this year’s Detroit show, Subaru was riding the wave of an excellent year that saw a rise in sales as well as market share. Officials had stories of “honest long-term value, reliability and strong retained value” and of customers coming to the brand while moving from large SUVs to more efficient vehicles such as the Outback. But there was also mention that “people forget we have been making sedans.” The carmaker’s core model is indeed the Legacy sedan which is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2009.

More than 3.6 million of these cars have been built in Subaru’s plants in Japan and Indiana since 1989. To underscore the importance of the Legacy sedan, Subaru unveiled the Legacy Concept, a virtual giveaway of an upcoming all-new Legacy.

Introduced as “a global mid-size sedan with interior space to fit four adults in comfort” this concept is built around versions of Subaru’s trademark boxer engine – in 3.6-litre form – and “symmetrical” all-wheel drive system. Painted in gleaming “Ultimate Silver”, the mid-size sedan has muscular flanks with strongly-accentuated wheel arches and front grille that looks disturbingly Chevrolet-like, in spite of Subaru’s claim that it conveys its new graphic signature. One has yet to detect a coherent design theme with the carmaker’s recent creations.

With its “striking four-seat layout” and the interior, as often in concepts, is pure design hyperbole not very likely to make it into the production model. The seats are draped in Pearl White leather “with a blue sheen” while the black metallic leather on the door trim creates contrast. The center console features a large touch-screen display that groups controls for the major systems. In all likelihood, the production version of the Legacy will be introduced at the New York auto show next spring.

Kia Soul’ster

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

By Marc Lachapelle

Weeks only after launching the production version of the highly-promising, streetwise, urban-chic Soul compact at the Los Angeles auto show, Kia shows yet another concept variation on this theme in Detroit. Introduced as ‘soul-stirring’, the Soul’ster (get it?) is a fun-focused, two-door version of the Soul with most of its steel roof lopped off and replaced by solid-looking black roll bars.

Kia Soul'ster (Photo: Isaac Adams-Hands)

Described by Kia US Chief designer Tom Kearns as “an efficient front-wheel drive car rather than an aggressive off-roader”, the bright yellow Soul’ster is dead-aimed at young buyers. In this spirit, it shuns ubiquitous power accessories and instead offers components such as a two-piece top that is removed using “elbow-grease technology” and visible window cranks that have been conspicuously turned into design features. There are storage bins below each of the fold-flat rear seats and additional compartments under the cargo floor at the rear.

Running on chunky, five-spoke, 19-inch alloy wheels, the Soul’ster could be powered by a variety of engines, according to the requirements of each market. These range from four-cylinder gasoline engines with displacements of either 1.6 or 2.0 litres to a 1.6-liter turbodiesel powerplant, mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic, in the case of the 140-horsepower 2.0-litre unit. No production plans were announced but designer Kearns sees “another category buster” in the Soul’ster.

Chrysler Electric Vehicles

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Author: Marc Lachapelle

While major competitors are locked into a race to bring a single extended-range electric or even a plug-in hybrid car to market, the beleaguered Chrysler Corporation has introduced no fewer than five different electric-drive vehicle platforms in Detroit. Furthermore, the first vehicle to be spun off one of these platforms would be produced for North America in 2010 and three more by 2013. Such announcements, mere days after the approval of the TARP financial rescue agreements, have a taste of vapourware. Yet, Chrysler is adamant about its plan and goes even further by stating its goal of having 500,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2013, a number that includes its market-leading GEM neighbourhood electric vehicles.

The carmaker had already unveiled three rechargeable electric prototypes last fall and presented updated versions in Cobo Hall. The sports car, now called Dodge Circuit EV, a four-door Jeep Wrangler and a Chrysler minivan. To these, Chrysler now adds the Jeep Patriot EV and the all-new Chrysler 200C EV sports sedan concept. Both are ‘range-extended electric vehicles while the Dodge Circuit, built on a version of the Lotus Elise chassis, runs on electric power exclusively.

Looking at the Circuit and 200C on display, Chrysler design chief Ralph Gilles spontaneously says: “they look so good, you wouldn’t think they are electric vehicles.” Asked about his favourite, Gilles immediately replies: “The 200C, no doubt. It is a sign of where I want to take Chrysler design. Basically back to its prominence in the mid-90s.” One can only wish the passionate Gilles, who grew up in Montreal and went on to design the smashing Chrysler 300C sedan, to succeed again.

Volvo S60 Concept

If you squint just a little while gazing at the Volvo S60 Concept, you can be quite confident that you are looking at the all-new car that will soon bow as the long-awaited successor to the S60 as a 2010 model. The current model has been around since 2001.

The sleek, wind-cheating lines are a clear giveaway of the upcoming car’s exterior shape, said new Volvo Cars President and CEO Stephen Odell, but you shouldn’t count on the concept’s striking interior to make it to the production line intact.

The S60 Concept is at once perfectly recognizable as a Volvo and infused with radically modern elegance. Designers were inspired by “Scandinavian design and the Swedish coastline’s cliffs and seas” while shaping it, Volvo design chief Steve Mattin poetically says. The body lines ‘forge a continuous flow pattern inspired by the fast sweeps of a racing track” says Mattin, adding that we should expect to see more of this in upcoming Volvos.

The interior is an even more daring projection to the future, with its four, flowing thin-backed seats and the cabin’s “jewel in the crown”, a suspended centre console made from the famous Swedish Orrefors crystal. Light-coloured leather and birch wood is everywhere insides, in true modern Scandinavian style.

The S60 Concept is also replete with innovative safety components, including a system that detects pedestrians and can apply full braking power if the driver does not respond quickly enough, a feature that will be found in the new S60. The concept is powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder gas engine with turbocharged direct injection (GTDi) that produces 180 hp, a technology that will be introduced later this year. It also features a ‘start-stop’ function and a “Powershift” transmission, basically two manual gearboxes that work in parallel, each with its own clutch, according to Volvo.

Bentley GTC Speed launched …

Bentley chose the 2009 North American International Auto Show to launch one of the fastest hair dryers in the world, the 600 hp Continental GTC.

This 2485kg, all-wheel drive convertible can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds, and its top speed, with the roof down is 312 km/h (roof up you gain an extra 10 km/h).

You can visually spot the difference between the regular GTC and the GTC Speed from its more upright grille and a very slim spoiler on the trunk.

Inside you get a new steering wheel, an upgraded navigation system, and a wonderful new Naim sound system that features 14-speakers that can pump out 1100 watts.

Just so you don’t lose yourself listening to the music too much, there is an intelligent cruise control system which keeps a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front automatically.

To make your journeys even more relaxing, you get massaging seats for the driver and the front passenger, just the thing you need on your drive to the spa.

The Continental GTC is on sale now, and if you have to ask how much, you just aren’t rich enough yet.

Ford launches 2010 GT500 at N.A.I.A.S.

Two of the most famous names in American motoring history, Mustang and Shelby, have been reunited once again for the 2010 model year.

Carroll Shelby himself was at hand at the 2009 North American International Auto Show to unveil the 2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 coupe and convertible.

Compared to the 2008 model, the new GT500 gets a new body, which looks fantastic, a new, much improved interior, and a lot more muscle.

For 2010, all GT500’s will benefit from the same motor that was in the limited edition 2008 GT500KR model, that means a 5.4-liter, dual overhead cam, V8, producing 540 hp and 510 lb/ft of torque. This mean 0-100 km/h is dealt with in 4.6 seconds and it will top out at nearly 290 km/h.

To stop this beast, the GT500 gets bigger brakes in the front, 250 mm in diameter compared to 215 mm on the outgoing model. The new brakes are constructed from copper and fiberglass which makes them more robust.

The new model also features new 19-inch rims, wrapped in Goodyear F1 supercar tires for better handling. While the new chassis tuning is said to provide better body control, the GT500 still has to make do with a live-beam rear axle.

The new GT500 will be in showrooms from this summer, however no Canadian pricing has been revealed.

Lincoln C Concept

Friday, January 16th, 2009

By Mike Goetz

There weren’t too many notable surprise concepts at Detroit – this was one, the Lincoln C Concept. The “C” stands for C-size car, which means Focus/Corolla/Civic territory. This would be a dramatic move, if the premier Lincoln brand were to actually build a production car in this category.

Ford’s chief designer for the Americas, Peter Horbury, noted that people have gotten used to the idea that you could pay more for a smaller version of the real thing, citing examples like laptops, iPods and digital cameras. “People will be happy to buy a smaller car that is better for the environment and more maneuverable in the city as long as the vehicle has all the attributes they want.”

The concept features a 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine and Ford’s all-new, dry, dual-clutch Powershift six-speed transmission. The interior is way out there, with steering wheel, console and seats that appear to be floating in space. The vehicle also debuted Ford’s vision for  future connectivity – a new human-machine interface that puts the original Star Trek’s “bridge” to shame.

Audi R8 V10 and Sportback concept

This is a big year for Audi, as in the summer of 2009 they’ll be celebrating their 100th birthday.

To start of their celebrations, they gave not one, but two World premieres at this years North American International Auto Show.

First up was the R8 V10. This latest version of the R8 supercar features a 5.2-liter, 10-cylinder engine, which produces 525hp thanks to its clever FSI fuel-injection technology.

With its extra punch comes extra speed, the latest version will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, and will top out at 310 km/h, when the O.P.P. officer isn’t looking that is. The R8 V10 will go on sale in June this year.

The second unveil was for their Sportback concept, which many believe will be badged A7 when it eventually goes into production.

This four-door coupe concept however featured Audi’s 3.0-liter, V6 clean-diesel engine. This motor produces 225 hp, but more impressively Audi claims this car is capable of averaging 5.9-liters/100 km. For a spacious, stylish, luxury vehicle, that is not bad at all.

Other notable features on the Sportback concept is its seven-speed tiptronic transmission and that its ultra slippery shape has a drag coefficient of just 0.30.

No word yet on when it will go into production, but don’t be surprised if Audi decides to show a production version of this car at the Frankfurt Auto Show later this year.
